Awnings were developed hundreds of
years ago (in the dark ages before air conditioning) to provide two
primary purposes - direct water away from window openings and provide
shade. The most effective way to
control the sun's heat and glare is to stop it before it enters your
window. Once the sun's rays enter they are absorbed and begin to radiate
throughout the room in the form of heat. Much like a big shade tree,
exterior shading will help reduce your cooling costs, can reduce the load
on your air conditioning and will help reduce glare and fading.
Studies have shown that awnings can reduce the temperature
inside a house by ten degrees. On a hot eighty-degree day your house
could be a comfortable seventy-degrees without running the air
conditioning! Of course if you still wish to run the AC, it will run less
and save you money.
